A rotary polisher, contrary to a dual action polisher, uses only one type of motion to create a polishing effect. It is very good at cutting and works quicker than a D/A, but it also requires much more experience and knowledge to use properly.
The increased cutting power makes it easier to cut more paint than needed, increasing the risk of burning through the paintwork. A rotary polisher can sometimes be useful in small spaces. Because the machine doesn’t have a “throw”, it can be easier to work very close to an edge or a sharp corner. Users of rotary polishers typically experience holograms of buffer trails after the cutting stage. These holograms are easily removed by following up with a dual action polisher and a finishing polish.
In short, a rotary polisher has these advantages:
– Great for heavy cutting (less passes)
– Great for edge work (it’s not moving side to side, it’s spinning in one place)
– It’s an option in a detailer’s arsenal of polishers
**Only experienced detailers should handle a rotary polisher! Use with caution!
